06/15/06 Thu(1) Here we go, Lady Liberty!

once we stepped out of the subway station, we saw this huge building(some sort of museum?) and of course we grabbed the chance to take picutres!
well, seems like we got lost somehow... (actually it was really easy, just follow the crowds!)

Lady Liberty is a present from the French

when the French gave U.S. Lady Liberty, the Americans weren't very excited about it. they didn't even have the 基座 for her ready. poor Lady Liberty!
what's worse, for a long time the Americans just couldn't let the statue be as it is; they tried to turn this piece of art and appreciation into something 'practical,' like a light house. so they dig lots of holes into it. this is the original torch. the rain had made it so eroded that people had to replace it. the one that the Lady is holding now actually resemble the original design much musch closer. (in fact, the whole statue was so eroded that a reconstruction in 1984 was 'mandatory,' otherwise the statue would collapse in a decade!)
